Measures

A network of experts from all the participating partner countries established itself during a LIFE-Starter application. The experts ensure that all planned measures to save the fire bellied toad in its habitats in Denmark, Sweden, Latvia and Germany are put into practice:

  • Optimising and building new areas for spawning
  • Construction of new wintering areas
  • Establishment of extensive grazing to successfully maintain spawning areas
  • Linking up of habitats

Within the population management there are also plans for small bombina populations, plans of resettlement and reserve populations, established by raising young toads in rearing stations; it is further responsible for:

  • Spawning of mated toads in cages or collection of eggs in the spawning areas
  • Raising of tadpoles in artificial waterbasins
  • Releasing juvenile toads

In addition to this genetic examinations in the areas of circulation are being carried out by Prof. Ralph Tiedemann, University of Potsdam, in order to find answers to the questions important to population management.
